Mission Statement
To captivate new and existing audiences across Scotland, building a
reputation for excellence by telling great stories through distinctive, well-crafted
and compelling theatre productions.
SPARTAN is a New York-trained Glasgow-based theatre company, bringing new work to fruition using the technique and philosophy of Practical Aesthetics in all aspects of our work.
Whats in a name?
It refers to our aesthetic principles which are related to and inspired by the ancient people of SPARTA, the first democracy in history, where women enjoyed the same elementary rights of ownership and education as men, feared and admired for their virtue, their courage, their artistic abilities and achievements. Their pragmatic, stoic, devoted, self-disciplined, educated and intelligent approach is mirrored in our work ethic and aesthetic.
We aim to do this by:
- Championing contemporary writing that is new to and from Scotland.
- Employing our working methodology of Practical Aesthetics in the creation, rehearsal and performance of our work.
- Espousing the highest ideals of artistic integrity and professionalism in all aspects of the company's business. Producing at least one fully resourced show per year.
- Sharing our working aesthetic and ethos within formal and informal channels of education.
- To advance, improve, promote and maintain the education of adults in the arts, particularly in the areas of the dramatic and performing arts.
- To provide a range of training opportunities in the performing arts, particularly acting, directing and creative writing.
SPARTAN's members are professional actors, directors and writers, training and working together in pursuit of excellence. They embrace common aesthetic principles and common working practices.
The motto of our ensemble is 'Raise the Bar' - this comes from the award-winning American director Anne Bogart and expresses in the simplest form our desire to increase expectations, our own and that of the audience.
